What is Magic Updater?

Updating Joomla Core is a very complicated and time-consuming task and sometimes a small mistake in the process can play havoc in the final result. Magic Updater is an extension designed to make the life of Webmasters and Website Owners easier. It automates the whole process, from checking the availability of the latest Joomla version, backing up the website and so on until the final step of the update takes place.

Magic Updater is designed in a way that the webmaster can keep full control over the whole process. This means that you can control whether or not the component updates your Joomla automatically, or to which version. Even there are some cool capabilities for Custom Upgrades for Advanced Users and Webmasters. This means that Webmasters can upgrade their Joomla based on a customized Joomla and use their own URL for upgrades. This prevents the loss of the custom features like for example specific Calendars or such.

The product is consists of a Component and a Plug-in that together provide all the necessary features for a safe transition to a new Joomla version.

FAQ

1- How does the component work?
The comoponent connects to joomla download page at http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/frs/ and looks for the latest version of joomla 1.5 installation. It then checks the current version of joomla on your site and if it is older than the newest available version on the official joomla site, it alerts you about updating to the latest version.

2- Does the component support custom download links for joomla update?
In all our commercial versions, the users can add as many custom links as they like to update their joomla installations from.

3- Does the component backup the current files before performing an update?
In the pro versions of the component, it backups the current files before performing an update. It shows you a link to download the zipped file.

4- What extensions are supported by the magic updater component?
The magic updater only works with zip extension and you should keep it in mind when you want to add custom links to the updater.

5- How can I update my component?
In the pro versions of the component, it is possible to automatically update the component from within the component page. When a new version is released, you will see a new button on the top right of the component page and buy clicking on that button, the autoupdate process will start.

6- How many domains can I use the component on?
If you purchased the silver or silver pro license of the component, you can only use it on one domain. If you purchased gold or gold pro license of the component, you can use it on as many domains as you have on one hosting server IP address.

7- Does the component have an unlimited domain/unlimited IP license?
The component doesn't have any unlimited domain/unlimited IP licenses.

8- How can I place the component icon in the administrative control panel of joomla?
In the pack you downloaded, you will find a file named mod_joomlaupdatericonv1.0.0.zip. This file is the module which is necessary to show the magic updater icon. You must install it using joomla standard installation page. To set the module active, you must go to Extensions->Module Manager->Administrator and look for 'Magic Updater Icon'. Then you should click on it and set the position to 'icon' from the drop down menu. Then, set the 'Enabled' to 'Yes' and you will be able to see the icon in your Joomla administrator control panel.

9- Can I automatically update my site as soon as a new version of joomla is released?
Yes. The product contains a zipped file named plg_magicupdater.zip. If you install this plugin and set it active, as soon as a new version is released, your site will be updated automatically with the first visit.

10- What are the prerequisits for the component to work?
In the pro versions, the component will perform a check and tells you if you have the recommended settings or not. The only setting which the component won't work without is allow_url_fopen which should be set active.

11- What is difference between full package file and patch files?
As the name suggests, the full package contains all the necessary files to do a fresh install of the latest joomla package. The patch files are suitable for updating from 1.5.x to 1.5.y in which 1.5.x is your current version and 1.5.y is the latest version available on joomla official website. The component will find the correct patch based on your current version automatically and you can perform the update using the patch files.

12- Does the magic updater component change the joomla database and changes any data?
No. The magic updater is completely safe to use. It doesn't change any database tables or database data. So you don't have to worry about the data saved in your site.

13- Does the magic updater component change the third party components on the site?
No. The magic updater only updates original joomla files and remains the third party components, modules and plugins intact.

17-I clicked the update button and the system showed that my site was successfully updated. In fact the site still has the current version. What should I do ?

This problem occurs when php is compiled as an apache module and the ownership of joomla files is not assigned to apache user which is normally www-data. You should ask your server administrator to either compile php as cgi or change the ownership of joomla files and folders to the user:group of apache.

Magic Updater has been a blessing. The time and effort it takes to update Joomla without Magic Updater is nothing but a nightmare, and keep your fingers crossed that it all works correctly. Thanks so much for this extension. I've been enjoying this functionality on my Wordpress Blogs for quite some time now, and was recently loathed to convert one of my blogs over to a Joomla site simple because Joomla Core still had no built in automated updating system. Your extension has brought to Joomla a feature I think should be standard.

All that's required now, in this regard, is to automate the updating of Extensions/Add-ons. This feature alone saves me many hours every month on my Wordpress sites.

I used this to upgrade from 1.5.6 to 1.5.7 and it went without a hitch. Excellent!! Bravo.

WOW. Just tested it moving from 1.55 to 1.57 on a production site. I had my fingers crossed and held my breath. It took 7 mins total (had to take at least two more breaths in between), zero issues. GoDaddy.com has a similar system for automatically updating your Joomla install, but they are often several weeks/months behind a new J.X release.
